The Man, the Boy, and the Donkey
A man and his son were once going with their donkey to market. As they were walking along by his side a countryman passed them and said, "You fools, what is a donkey for but to ride upon?"
So the man put the boy on the donkey, and they went on their way.
But soon they passed a group of men, one of whom said, "See that lazy youngster, he lets his father walk while he rides."
So the man ordered his boy to get off, and got on himself. But they hadn't gone far when they passed two women, one of whom said to the other, "Shame on that lazy lout to let his poor little son trudge along."
Well, the man didn't know what to do, but at last he took his boy up before him on the donkey. By this time they had come to the town, and the passersby began to jeer and point at them. The man stopped and asked what they were scoffing at.
The men said, "Aren't you ashamed of yourself for overloading that poor donkey of yours -- you and your hulking son?"
The man and boy got off and tried to think what to do. They thought and they thought, until at last they cut down a pole, tied the donkey's feet to it, and raised the pole and the donkey to their shoulders. They went along amid the laughter of all who met them until they came to a bridge, when the donkey, getting one of his feet loose, kicked out and caused the boy to drop his end of the pole. In the struggle the donkey fell over the bridge, and his forefeet being tied together, he was drowned.

"That will teach you," said an old man who had followed them:
"Please all, and you will please none."

Review: Best Friends Forever
By Seana Duncan

Jennifer Weiner can always be counted on for a good, hearty read. Something you can curl up with on a rainy Saturday or breeze through on a longue chair poolside. Her latest novel, Best Friends Forever, released July 14, 2009, doesn’t disappoint.
One heroine is Addie Downs, an overweight, social awkward young girl who is desperate for friendship. When Valerie Adler moves in across the street and take an interest in Addie, a friendship is born. It’s the friendship Addie has always wanted; true-blue, best friend forever.
But the life happens, and Addie handles a series of difficult, emotionally devastating tragedies with quiet strength. After a betrayal in high school sends Addie and Valarie on different paths in life, a sudden event occurs when Valarie needs Addie’s help and their paths cross again. The combination of Addie’s witty observations and Valarie’s ineptitude are hilarious as the girls find their way back to each other and learn what it really, truly means to be best friends forever.
Jennifer Weiner, a fiction favorite, delivers a funny, touching story about one of the most relevant topics for women – friendship, but the tone and cadence of best Friends Forever is slightly different than some of her other novels. It’s a little more somber, a little more thoughtful – it makes the reader care about Addie. Similar to Rebecca Wells, Jennifer Weiner uses the perfect blend of funny and sad to make the reader emphasize and stick with Addie till the end.

Danny Glover lends dignity to the role of the  tormented president. Chiwetel Ejiofor, as the chief scientist, brings a moving sense of anguish to a stock role. Platt has fun playing the villain of the piece, and Woody Harrelson also chews the scenery as a bugeyed radio prophet trying  to warn his listeners about Armageddon.
All in one, 2012’s cinematography, production design and visual effects are awards-worthy. Music also propels the movie. It presents American Idol runner-up, Adam Lambert, who provides a rousing anthem over the end credits.
